Macramé Plant Holder

Finished Length: average length approx. 130cm (51”) long
*Size will vary depending on material used. Project can also be custom sized by altering the lengths of knots. If project is lengthened, more cord or macramé yarn may be required.

What You Need:

  • 42 metres of cord trim OR two skeins of macramé yarn*
*Recommended yarn: Tailor Yarns Essential Macrame Cord or Essential Macrame Basic
  • One 38mm (1 ½”) O-Ring

What You Do:

Step 1

Cut eight cords, 5 metres long and two cords, 1 metre long. Take the eight cords and pull them halfway through the O-Ring. *Please refer to the “Macrame Knot Info Sheet” with instructions on how to knot each macramé knot mentioned below

Step 2

Take one 1 metre long cord and create a Gathering Wrap below ring. Wrap around 12 times or until the wraps measure approx. 5cm (2”) long. Hang ring on a sturdy hook, or tape it flat on a surface to keep the ring in place, making it easier to work through the knots.

Step 3

Divide cords into four groups (four strands per group). For each group, Half Knot Spiral until each measures 25cm (10”).

Step 4

Drop down 15cm (6”) and tie one Regular Knot for each group.

Step 5

Square Knot until each group measures 25cm (10”). Use the shorter cords as the filler and the longer cords to make the knots.

Step 6

Drop down 10cm (4”). Join two strands from one group and two strands from the group beside it and make 2 Square Knots. Continue all around until you create four new groupings.

Step 7

Drop down 8cm (3”). Join two strands from one group and two strands from the group beside it and make 2 Square Knots. Continue all around until you create again four new groupings.

Step 8

Drop down 8 cm (3”) and gather ALL strands together with a Gathering Wrap, using the last 1 metre long cord. Wrap about 12 times or until the wraps measure approx. 5cm (2”) long.

Step 9

Finishing: Cut tassels off at 25cm (10”). Ends will naturally fray, OR tie tiny knots at the end of the tassels for a non frayed look.

Beaded Macramé Plant Holder

Finished Length: average length approx. 1m (40”) long
*Size will vary depending on material used. Project can also be custom sized by altering the lengths of knots. If project is lengthened, more cord may be required.

What You Need:

  • One Spool of 1mm-2mm hemp OR 37 metres of 1mm-2mm cable cord trim
*One spool of 20 lb, 1mm John Bead Hemp was used for this project.
  • 56 beads large enough to thread though your chosen cord size
*1 vial John Bead Czech Seed Beads, Size 2 was used for this project.

What You Do:

Step 1

Cut eight cords, 4.5 metres long, and two cords, 30cm (12”) long.
*Please refer to the “Macrame Knot Info Sheet” with instructions on how to knot each macramé knot mentioned below

To make loop for hanging: Find centre of cords and temporarily tie a piece of cord to mark the centre and to hold cords together. Tape centre flat on a surface to keep cords in place while knotting. Make 10 Square Knots, or knot until it measures approx. 4cm (1½”) down from where it is tied (there will be 6 filler cords). Repeat on the other side. Remove temporary cord and fold square knots at half mark. With one 30cm (12”) cord, create loop by making a Gathering Wrap right below the square knots. Wrap around 20 times or until the wraps measure approx. 2.5cm (1”).

Step 2

Half Knot Spiral for 10 cm (4”) (there will be 14 filler cords). Loosely knot and leave gaps between knots to avoid the spiral becoming too stiff.

Step 3

Divide cords into four groups (four strands per group). For each group, drop down 4cm (1.5”) and make 1 Square Knot, and thread one bead through the 2 middle filler cords. Repeat two more times and end off with 1 Square Knot to keep the last bead in place. Square Knot for 5cm (2”). Same as before, thread one bead through the 2 middle filler cords and make 1 Square Knot. Repeat two more times.

Step 4

For each group, drop down 6cm (2¼”) 1 Square Knot, bead, 1 Square Knot. Repeat once more.

Step 5

For each group, drop down 8cm (3”) 1 Square Knot and thread one bead through the 2 middle filler cords. Repeat two more times. Half Knot Spiral for 10 cm (4”). Same as before, thread one bead through the 2 middle filler cords and make 1 Square Knot. Repeat two more times.

Step 6

Drop down 6cm (2¼”). Join two strands from one group and two strands from the group beside it and make 2 Square Knots. Continue all around until you create four new groupings.

Step 7

Drop down 6cm (2¼”). Join two strands from one group and two strands from the group beside it and make 2 Square Knots. Continue all around until you create again four new groupings.

Step 8

Drop down 5cm (2”) and gather ALL cords together with a Gathering Wrap. Using the last 30cm (12”) cord, wrap around 20 times or until the wraps measure approx. 2.5cm (1”).

Step 9

Finishing: Cut tassels off at 15cm (6”).
