Costume play, or what is more popularly known as COSPLAY, is a decades old visual form of performance celebrating pop culture fandom.
Participants express themselves through highly creative dress up and role playing drawing inspiration from geek pop culture including, but not limited to video games, animation, comic books, literature and movies.
Cosplay is multidisciplinary, involving styling, hair and make up, prop making and, of course, costuming! Despite its crafting and sewing fundamentals, it’s inclusive of all skill levels. Cosplayers attend pop culture fandom conventions known as Cons.
The most actively visited ones include International Comicon and Canadian FanExpo. Here they can enter Cosplay competitions where the higher standard of accuracy in the construction of their character is recognized as Competition Cosplay; whereas Convention Cosplay focuses on the fun of dress up rather than the level of skill.
In either case, this passionate artistic hobby embraces crafting, imagination and innovation; all characteristics of the Fabricland community!
Although, Fabricland has always been a go-to place for all Cosplay needs, Cosplayers can further indulge their imagination and craft the heroes they want with this new collection.

An easy project and a perfect gift for new babies and kids alike is a simple blanket made using back-to-back flannelette with rick rack edging for a sweet finish.
What You Need:
1.2m each of two fabrics
4.8m of 1/2″ or larger rick rack

With so many flannelette prints available, there’s no end to the fun you could have.
Have a little furry friend that needs a warm place to snuggle? Show your love and make a comfy bed using fleece ‘yarn’ and a jumbo crochet hook with your pets favourite fleece and crochet a cozy sleeping spot.
Diameter = approx. 46cm (18”)
Height = approx. 18cm (7”)
Gauge: 3.5 sc x 4 rows + 4″ (10cm)
Take your fleece, and with right sides together, fold fabric lengthwise with selvedges together. Cut off selvedges on both ends and pin the edges together.
With your ruler and marker, mark every 4cm (1.5”) along the length of your fabric both on the fold and raw edges. Connect the marks, and starting from the fold, cut along the line.
You will be left with strips 4cm (1.5”) wide and 152cm (60”) long. Tie all strips together in a knot to create one long strand of yarn. As you go along, with right side facing up, pull tightly and stretch out each strip. This will make the raw edges naturally curl inward, making it easier to crochet. Repeat for all colours.
Round 1: Starting with Colour A, CH4. Close circle with a SL ST in the first CH. Make 5 SC in the middle of the circle. SL ST in 1st ST to close round.
Round 2: CH1. Make 2 SC in the first ST. Place stitch marker on the first SC. Continue to make 2 SC in each ST. SL ST in CH1 to close round. (Total of 10 STS)
Round 3: CH1. *Make 1 SC in the first ST. Place stitch marker. Make 2 SC in the next; While keeping the stitch marker on the first ST, repeat from * to end of round. SL ST in CH1 to close round. (Total of 15 STS)
Round 4: CH1. *Make 1 SC in the first 2 STS. Place stitch marker on the first SC. Make 2 SC in the third ST; While keeping the stitch marker on the first ST, repeat from * to end of round. SL ST in CH1 to close round. (Total of 20 STS)
Round 5: CH1. *Make 1 SC in the first 3 STS. Place stitch marker on the first SC. Make 2 SC in the fourth ST; While keeping the stitch marker on the first ST, repeat from * to end of round. SL ST in CH1 to close round. (Total of 25 STS)
*continue this pattern until Round 10, increasing 5 STS per round.
Round 11-12: CH1, SC all STS. SL ST in CH1 to close round.
Round 13-14: Change to Colour B. CH1, SC all STS. SL ST in CH1 to close round.
Round 15-16: Change to Colour C. CH1, SC all STS. SL ST in CH1 to close round.
Round 17: SL ST in all STS to end of round.

Whether you’re going out on the town or celebrating at home, make a statement and ring in the New Year wearing something luxurious or sparkly … or both!
Sequins, velvet and lace are go-to choices for fancy dresses and evening wear. Pick your favourite pattern and fabric and sew yourself something spectacular just in time to shout HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Pick a simple pattern with as few seams as possible.
Identify the “nap” or the direction of the sequins and cut all pieces in the same direction. Cut your pattern pieces from the wrong side, and from a single layer of fabric.
For best results, remove any sequins from the seam allowance by hand before sewing pieces together; particularly if they are large and stiff. You may need to hand sew ‘extra’ sequins along the seam afterwards to cover any blank areas.
Use a needle that’s thin and sharp and keep plenty of extras on hand. A thicker or dull needle can get stuck in the sequins when sewing.
Don’t iron, but do press. Very low heat (remember sequins may melt at high heat), press from the wrong side of your fabric and use a presser cloth (such as a scrap piece of cotton) to protect your sequins. Remember to test on a scrap piece beforehand.
Sequined fabric should always be lined to avoid skin irritation.
Cut all patterns pieces in a single layer. Lay your fabric nap side down and place your pattern pieces on the back to minimize slipping and use a lot of pins.
You want to make sure your pattern pieces are secure and won’t shift when sewing. Again, use a lot of pins or hand baste in place before sewing.
Use only the sew-in type of interfacing if needed.
To press use a towel or scrap fabric to protect the right side of your fabric while you steam the wrong side. Hover with the iron rather than apply any pressure so the velvet isn’t crushed.
Check your lace fabric for any obvious right and wrong sides. Pay attention to the design elements of your lace and place the pattern pieces to take advantage of the design rather than trying to cut the lace straight across. Cut all patterns pieces in a single layer.
If pins don’t hold the lace pieces together, try small binder clips. Another option would be tailor tacks or a loose basting stitch which can be removed afterwards.
Use a narrow zig zag stitch for the seams. Use a strip of skin coloured fabric to bind the trimmed seam allowance; it will then be almost unnoticeable against your skin. Alternatively, use a French seam.
